Title: I’ll Meet You There
Author: Heather Demetrios
Pages: 388 Pages
Publisher: Henry Holt
If seventeen-year-old Skylar Evans were a typical Creek View girl, her future would involve a double-wide trailer, a baby on her hip, and the graveyard shift at Taco Bell. But after graduation, the only thing standing between straightedge Skylar and art school are three minimum-wage months of summer. Skylar can taste the freedom–that is, until her mother loses her job and everything starts coming apart. Torn between her dreams and the people she loves, Skylar realizes everything she’s ever worked for is on the line.
Nineteen-year-old Josh Mitchell had a different ticket out of Creek View: the Marines. But after his leg is blown off in Afghanistan, he returns home, a shell of the cocksure boy he used to be.
What brings Skylar and Josh together is working at the Paradise–a quirky motel off California’s dusty Highway 99. Despite their differences, their shared isolation turns into an unexpected friendship and soon, something deeper.
I’m a bit late to the game when it comes to Heather Demetrios and her brilliant books. I recently read Bad Romance and was completely blown away and then was even more astounded when I realised that I actually already had one of her books languishing quietly on my bookshelf.
I grabbed for I’ll Meet You There and decided to read it. I thought I would consume it, gobble it up with crazy fervour but I didn’t. I took it slow. I think I needed too because Bad Romance gave me a heady book hangover and I didn’t want to feel that again. So take it slow I did but man it packed a powerful punch. There are so many layers to this story. You have family issues, alcoholism, trapped in a Podunk town, veterans. There is so much to contend with. But that is what Demetrios does. She contends with contentious issues in such a fearless way. She is fearless.
Essentially, when you strip back all the layers there is a love story at its heart. However, it is all the added extras that make it a beautifully heartbreaking read. I’ll Meet You There really is a must for your TBR pile.
