The Blurb

Sexting. Virginity. Consent. The Big O … Let’s face it, doing it can be tricksy. I don’t know anyone (including myself) who has sex all figured out. So I’ve written a book full of honest, hilarious (and sometimes awkward) anecdotes, confessions and revelations. And because none of us have all the answers, I’ve invited some friends and fellow YouTubers to talk about their sexuality, too.

We talk about doing it safely. Doing it joyfully. Doing it when you’re ready. Not doing it. Basically, doing it the way you want, when you want. So. Let’s do this …

The Review

I have a very prudish mother and when I was younger (so much younger than today) she would turn the television over if kissing scenes got a little bit steamy. She would do this with a squeal saying “I’m not watching bonking!” I would love to say that she was just trying to protect my innocence because I was young but she still does it today. I’m 33 years old.

So a lot of the things about the facts of life I learned from reading. One book in particular springs to mind. I think it was called The Teenage Worriers Guide to Love or something of that ilk. To be fair I didn’t fully understand it then and sex education classes in school were (and to some extent, still are) atrocious. With a mother who had an almost Victorian view of sex and the school giving me a clinical and embarrassing account of it I was bound to be confused.

What I really needed was a book like Hannah Witton’s. Doing It! Let’s Talk About Sex is an honest, frank and mature look at the perils of teenagedom when facing the pressing question of having sex. Witton doesn’t assume her audience knows the ins and outs (and ins and outs…you get the picture) but equally she doesn’t talk down to her readers. She treats them like equals and you get the sense that she has taken the old adage of write the book that you want to read and she has done it with aplomb. It is almost as if she has looked at her younger self and realised that if she didn’t know what was going on then there are probably thousands – nay, millions – who feel the same.

I work in a high school library and I would love to have this on our shelves so that the students that I work with can better equip themselves with the information before going into sex naively. Sadly, I think a lot of high schools will veto its purchase. It is a shame because Witton’s writing is brilliant. Hannah Witton, my 15 year old self salutes you.
