Back to School….Again

Today is officially my first day back in work. I had an inset day yesterday but that doesn’t really count. Being back at school has got me thinking about my own high school experience. It was fairly middle-of-the-road. It wasn’t great but it wasn’t terrible either. Unsurprisingly, I spent most of my time in the library. When I read some YA fiction I do get a tad jealous of the characters experiences so I thought today I would share the top three fictional schools I would have loved to attend.

3) Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches

I absolutely loved the Worst Witch series by Jill Murphy. I wanted to go to Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches so badly as a child. I mean on the first day they are given a kitten. Come on! Every high school should adopt this and I promise you that it would be the happiest place to be – screw Disneyland! Kittens in school are the future.

Honestly though, it just sounded fabulous. Even though Mildred Hubble had a hard time what with being bullied by Ethel Hallow and being taken to task by Miss Hardbroom she had Maud and Tabby looking out for her. Also he was learning magic. Watch the Tories try and control that curriculum.

2) Stalag 14

Ok technically Georgia Nicholson’s school isn’t called Stalag 14 but it is what she refers to it as. I started reading the wonderful Angus Thongs series when I was still a teenager and Louise Rennison (who sadly died this year) got the voice of a teenager bang on. I was Georgia. At least I was in my head. I wanted to be friends with Jaz and fancy Sex God Robbie and also actually quite fancy Dave the Laugh. Georgia was just a tragic heroine and I loved everything about her. So much so that I bought the full series of books in a box set for my niece to read. She is one so I might have to wait a while for that to happen.

1) Hogwarts

Oh come on, it had to be Hogwarts.

Every year I wait to receive my Hogwarts letter and every year I am so very disappointed.

The first time I read the Harry Potter books I did it purely to see what all the hype was about. At this point The Goblet of Fire was the last Harry Potter book to be released so it was quite far into the series. From the first read I realised I was hooked. This world is, for want of a better word, magical. The world of Harry Potter is so complex and dark and steeped in mythology and so well thought out that it makes my brain hurt thinking about it. But I love it. I recently read a quote in a book about the Harry Potter series, the book was called The Deviants by CJ Suske and it went:

‘I thought you were over Harry Potter?’

He glared at me. ‘You don’t ever ‘get over’ Harry Potter, Ella. At best you just learn to live with the fact that fucking envelope’s never going to arrive.’

That is exactly how I feel about Harry Potter….although a little part of me still believes that one day, yes one day I will get my letter and get to go to Hogwarts, learn to be a wizard and no longer be a muggle.

So, what are your favourite schools featured in books? Do you think that I have missed any off my list? Let me know!

Great idea for a post. I am watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 1 for the first time right now and I know one fictional school I WOULD NOT have wanted to go to.

How did I not include Sunnydale? I would have loved to go there…you know, even with all the crazy vampire and demonic action x x
