A short account of getting ulcerative colitis as a kid, the drug I needed to take, the drug not controlling the disease, having my colon removed and the joys that came along with that.
I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2012 and I have been through a lot since (you can read all about that here) and I am always fascinated to know what other IBD sufferers have gone through. That might sound really morbid but it is more in the tradition of keeping your enemy close – my enemy: my dodgy digestive tract. According to Crohn’s and Colitis UK 300,000 people in the UK are living with this form of IBD and in fact someone is diagnosed with IBD every 30 minutes on average. Yet before I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, I had never heard of it.
I downloaded Mike Tripton’s book, Ulcerative Colitis Sucks because he is correct Ulcerative Colitis does, indeed, suck. I wanted to know other people’s experiences with this lifelong illness. Mike Tripton seems to have drawn the short straw. His experiences with having UC have been awful and I genuinely feel empathy for what he has gone through. Without trying to sound ungrateful – unless you have IBD you will never understand or know the anxiety that comes with it. You can sympathise and you can do everything right but you will never really, truly get it.
What I did find terribly sad about Mike Tripton’s account is that he doesn’t seem to have found any silver lining or positive outcome of having Ulcerative Colitis. I have. It has brought me and my family members closer, it has created a new level of empathy, I worry less about the little things.
Overall, Ulcerative Colitis Sucks is a really sad tale of someone who is suffering. I genuinely hope that Mike Tripton feels more able to cope soon.
