The Blurb

Before the crown there was a love story…

Windsor Castle, 1943

As war rages across the world, Princess Elizabeth comes face to face with the dashing naval officer she first met in London nine years before.

One of the youngest first lieutenants in the Royal Navy, Philip represents everything she has always been taught to avoid. Instability. Audacity. Adventure.

But when the king learns of their relationship, the suitability of the foreign prince is questioned by all at court.

He is the risk she has never been allowed to take. The risk not even the shadow of the crown will stop her from taking…

Step through the palace gates and discover a captivating historical novel of royal secrets and forbidden love exploring the tempestuous courtship between Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip in the wake of WWII.

The Review

Okay, I’ll admit it. I love me some royal scandal. I was raised as a royalist and I flippin’ love the history of it all. Therefore, Flora Harding’s Before the Crown was like catnip to me.

Before the Crown is the story of Princess Elizabeth and Philip’s courtship and the stumbling blocks they faced during their relationship. How Philip was not seen as  worthy candidate for the princess and how the media intrusion felt oppressive. Hmm, interesting take Flora Harding, once that definitely parallels modern circumstances.

Take away they royal element and Before the Crown is still a gorgeous love story. It is lovely to see the growing bond between the couple but also Harding has given Philip a voice which is something that hasn’t necessarily been given air time.

I really enjoyed Before the Crown. It was a generous look into the hidden world of the royal family.

Before the Crown by Flora Harding is available now.
